Parkinson's disease is a common neurodegenerative disorder affecting more than one million people in the United States alone. While some symptoms can be temporarily treated with drugs or surgery, there is no proven method for preventing the underlying neuronal death driving these symptoms. Dr. Swanson is developing a novel approach aim at blocking the toxic effects abnormal aggregates of the normal brain protein α-synuclein, setting the possible foundation for future development of more effective treatments.
